In 1968, Dr. Miles Tremont created a set of four artificial lifeforms, one for each common state that matter holds at various temperatures. The entities know as Solid, Liquid, Ener-Jeannie and Vapor banded together as the super-heroic group, The Experimentals.

Speculations, Observations, and Theories

The Experimentals possess the ability to transmute matter, transitioning it from one of the four states to another, though the precise sorts of transitions they are capable of differ from member to member. For example, solid can transmute energy or gas into solid mass -- mass which he can add to his own, bolstering his size.

We can't be entirely certain about whether The Experimentals are still active today. On the one hand, the fact that the Enelsians took their stasis pods ('97) suggests they still exist in some form.

On the other hand, they have been completely absent during every present day Astro City story to date, including the ones involving great disaster. It is possible they are in being kept in stasis permanently or for a long duration. Though headlines from late 1995 would suggest that they might be active.

There is possibly also a mysterious fifth Experimental, though as yet next to nothing is known about him/her and his/her nature.
