American Chibi

A life-sized anime chibi who fights crime. Yes!

History

American Chibi is fairly new on the scene, debuting sometime in 2012. She acts like an overly exuberant, giddy teenager. She's loud, she's super-strong, she's energetic, she's naive and innocent. She's a do-gooder, but mainly she's just LOUD!

In the Summer of 2013, she thwarted the Iron Legion during their attempt to steal a Roman amphora whose patterns were secretly encoded with alien technology. That same day, she was the first Astro City hero to notice Telseth's doorway appearing on the banks of the Gaines River. She promptly tried to charge through the door, albeit unsuccessfully. She, along with various other superheroes and E.A.G.L.E. agents investigated the inexplicable phenomenon and were on hand to witness Telseth's arrival on Earth. ("Through Open Doors (Part One)")

In a relatively short time she has become a well known fixture. Her solo adventures are making headlines, and her involvement with high profile peers like Samaritan, Honor Guard, and others is impressive. Newness aside, despite(or because of) her naivety, she is proving to be a very accomplished doer of good deeds. Her courage and spunk eventfully lead to her formal membership in Honor Guard in late 2015.

Powers

She possesses flight and super-strength.

Footnotes

  • In a U.S.A. Today interview, creator Kurt Busiek mentions that American Chibi was inspired by Scott McCloud's Japanese chibi drawing of himself.
  • "Chibi" is a Japanese slang word for a short person. It has morphed into use to also denote a style of drawing that contorts body proportions to resemble those of a young child, only even further exaggerated, especially the head.
