Fear generates many unpleasant side effects. Hate, genocide, xenophobia, homophobia, war. A counter force emerges and good people rise above and resist the hate mongers. An interesting side effect of that resistance manifests a new entity, appropriately called the Resistor. His, or her(depending on who is first transformed) power strengthens as more people embrace the better angels within them. The outcome seems to depend on the inner motivation and good conscious of those who embrace common justice for all. Yet fear too has a powerful influence over the weak, the ignorant, and those who have hardened their minds and made bitter their hearts. There is no guarantee which side fate's prevailing winds will favor.

The Confessor
An iconic Super-hero, with a shadowy past. The Confessor, long suspected and now confirmed as a vampire, has patrolled the streets of Astro City for decades, nearly nonstop. Thought killed and destroyed at the climax of the eNelsian alien invasion, he has nonetheless(as most vampires will do) returned from the grave to continue his nightly patrols of Astro City's dark and seedy districts. His hunting remains focused on criminals. His methodologies now seem more sophisticated, relying on advanced technology and arcane mystical powers sourcing from remote and ancient tribal customs.

He is Astro City's most revered hero. His bravery inspired the grateful citizens to rename their city in his honor. Major headlines extolling his adventures are strewn about local and national print media of the depression era and beyond. Called a genius beyond all peer, a legend living well before his times, a seemingly cavalier bachelor, yet underneath a complex, quite serious individual. The final sacrifices he made for mankind at large, occurred during the heated conflicts of the Second World War and just after. His tragic story is the center point of the special 100th anniversary issue, Astro City #41.

Monstro City's citizens vary widely in form, color, size, appendages, organs, and other bodily parts and pieces. Looking not so much like one species within a very narrow range of DNA encoding, but instead, almost like multiple species, with a very broad and dynamic DNA "footprint." They are still very much a part of the hominid branch, but they seem to stretch the genetic extremes to their limits. They (some? most? all?) can (and do) produce offspring from homo sapient relationships. For all intents and purposes they are human. To date, no published Astro City stories have studied their ancestry and DNA makeup in depth.

The man who is arguably the greatest hero of the modern era is in fact not from this era at all. Samaritan was a time-traveler from the 35th century sent back to 1986 to prevent the wasteland Earth he was born into from coming about. The transit suffused him with "empyrean fire," giving him enormous physical power as well as the ability to project an "empyrean web."
Samaritan has been a member of the elite superhero team Honor Guard since at least 1991. He is in a romantic relationship with Winged Victory and yes, it is complicated.

Nightingale is rarely seen alone, either partnered in her early years with Sunshrike, and then later, with her new teammate, Sunbird. Her dual partnerships are unique. She was the younger sidekick to Sunshrike, but later, seems to be the strong mentor and motherly companion to Sunbird.
She picked up a stray cat for awhile, or did the cat pick her?

Tillie has a power than seems to transcend time, reality, the fourth wall, and probably several dimensions as well. She has been seen and participated in the ongoing story continuity of Astro City Comics for quite some time, although chances are you didn't know it. She seems to know how unique her powers are, and yet she remains amazed and thrilled at what they can do. They still surprise her, and oddly enough, they surprise the Broken Man too.
