A strange and mysterious being, the Hanged Man maintains a constant vigil over the neighborhood known as Shadow Hill, A shadowy figure, wearing a burlap bag over his face and a badly frayed rope around his neck. Remnants of an execution of no doubt ghastly and unjustified proportions.

[[Black Badge | K.O. Carson]] tells of olden times and the Hanged Man, some of those tales pre-date post World War I and the arrival of Air Ace. There are even accounts of the Hanged Man in mystic European folklore that originate from the Middle Ages.

But there are no specific details, just ghostly fragments of an ancient past.

Current police database files are loaded with Hanged Man's involvement in the protection of the residents of Astro City. One of his most revered actions revolved around the mysterious murders plaguing Shadow Hills during the Great Enelsian Invasion. That case baffled authorities who originally felt that the fate of the Confessor was somehow tied to the killings. Instead, it was the Hanged Man who discovered an extremely horrific, Lovecraftian type of beast as the real culprit. On a very dark night following both the death of the Confessor and the defeat of the Enelsians, an eerie light emanated over the old buildings inhabiting Shadow Hills. It was an enormous projection filling the skies, blending with the clouds. Made large by the Hanged Man so all the nervous, uneasy, and restless citizens of Astro City could not only see, but feel and experience the final life moments of the real Shadow Hills killer that had caused so much pain. That was the relief needed and in the end, the Hanged Man brought much needed closure for the victims and the city.

Picardy, France. 1748. Stephane Mesnier is about to pay a terrible price for crimes he committed during his brief mortal life. But fate it would seem has a different form of punishment beyond the standard methods of hanging. It would seem Stephane's plea for mercy are heard, and as the trap door beneath his feet is sprung open, and you hear the crack of his neck breaking as he falls, the noose around his neck severs suddenly and in shocked amazement to the crowd, the body of Mesnier soars skyward and the entity we know as the Hanged Man appears for all to behold.

A crowd member witnessing the execution, nervously mutters "The -- the H-Hanged Man" But is this a casual referenced to the man just executed, or has perhaps Stephane Mesnier assumed the essence of a character long known and feared from an all too real tale of French folklore?

===How It All Began===
Sarah Brandeis was a regular working woman, assisting the archaeologist Dr. McGillicuddy. In 1982, while doing research work, he found the [[Gem of Thebis]], an item of great magic power. The sinister [[Hellsignor]] came seeking it, clashing with various superheroes in the process. To prevent him from controlling the necklaced gem, the [[Point Man]], a member of the Omega Rangers, tossed the artifact around Sarah's neck. In that moment, for better or worse, she found the power and responsibility of Cleopatra irrevocably thrust upon her. With her newly acquired powers, Sarah vanquished Hellsignor to another dimension, but was left confused and overwhelmed.

In the ensuing months, The Omega Rangers helped her adjust to the culture shock of her new situation. Their most vital assistance was providing her with training on using her powers effectively. She quickly earned membership with the team.

===Joining Honor Guard and Solo Efforts===
Cleopatra has been a member of Honor Guard since at least 1995 and has had many exploits with them. During the [[Enelsian Invasion]], Cleopatra and Honor Guard were instrumental in discovering the initial Enelsian scout ship and later defending Astro City, which faced the brunt of the aliens attack. She also was present when the reawakened [[Omnius Rex]] in late 2004 required the combined might of Honor Guard, the [[First Family]] and other heroes of Astro City to be ultimately defeated.

In 2008, she again took part in helping repel an invading alien force with Honor Guard, this time the [[Torori]], whom the team fought with at Jupiter Station in outer space.

But her adventures with Honor Guard are only a part of her deeds, she has a stellar history apart from the team as well. In December of 1995 she took on [[Gnomicron]] at some point, presumably defeating the creature according to [[Mr. Bridwell]]'s notes. A few weeks later in January, while members of Honor Guard were covering for [[Samaritan]] and [[Winged Victory]]'s first date, Cleopatra faced a tornado threatening Topeka, Kansas. During [[Thunderhead]]s attempted destruction of the Astro City in September of 1996, she joined many various heroes in defending Astro City.

Teaming with [[Jack-in-the-Box (Roscoe James)|Jack-in-the-Box]] on a case in April of 2003, the duo reapprehended [[Demolitia]] and [[Slamburger]] who were trying to intimidate a member of the east-coast mob to agree to a deal on their terms.

===Honor Guard Activities===

Currently, she continues to serve with Honor Guard, as both a fighting member, and part of the management team, guiding employees of [[Honor Guard's Emergency Call Center]], a complex and highly sophisticated organization for gathering intelligence information, screening incoming emergency calls and monitoring world crisis situations.

She was among the superheroes who investigated [[Telseth]]'s doorway and witnessed his arrival on Earth. ("[[Through Open Doors (Part One)]]")

When Honor Guard made a charity appearance in Australia, she took the time to personally thank the Contact Center employees who organized it, congratulating them on the good work. ("[[Welcome to HumanoGlobal]]")

Alongside the rest of the team, she laid siege to the [[Skullcrushers]]' hidden base in Ecuador. When the [[Assemblyman II|Assemblyman]] was able to create a portal into the facility, she was part of the squad that went in. Afterwards, she spoke to [[Marella Cowper]], a guilt-plagued Honor Guard Call Center employee who felt all the violence was due to a mistake on her part. Cleopatra convinced her that not only did she deserved to keep her job, but she should also understand that it was employees who worked to fix their mistakes who are the real keepers. She fought the Ore-Master in his debut crime, when he attacked the home of a mining executive. He escaped that time, but he resurfaced to continue his vendetta, this time on a mine itself in Canada, and Cleopatra brought him down. ("[[Through Open Doors (Part Two)]]")

Cleopatra carries the Sun-Staff of Ra which the first Cleopatra also wielded in a somewhat different form. This mystic weapon can generate a pyramid-shaped force field called a "Power-Pyramid." By controlling their size, she uses them to bind adversaries.

She or her staff also possess a weather-shaping ability, and many are the foes who've been harried by storm and struck by lightning. She can survive in space without artificial protective gear, and she can fly. Some of these powers may be natural, while others might be dependent upon magical forces within her staff.

Cleopatra has significant super-strength, placing her with the highest echelon of super-powered entities, like Samaritan and [[The Gentleman]].

* Sarah's regular, casual speech was noticeably different from Cleopatra's grand, formal elocution. As Cleopatra, she sometimes even referred to herself in the third person. However, in her most recent appearances, Cleopatra is talking much more like a regular 21st century woman, perhaps indicative of some change in the very nature of the transformation.
* In the story "[[Her Dark Plastic Roots]]", following an adventure with Honor Guard, she casually mentions an "afternoon lecture" as part of her schedule for the day. Considering her connection to Dr. McGillicuddy, this might indicate her position as a professor of archaeology at an area university.
* She switches between her Sarah Brandeis and Cleopatra IDs via transformation.

Kitkat, one of many costumed characters that provide a complex support structure within the heroic history of Astro City. To date however, she has mainly been stage-dressing, one of the many super-hero "spear-carriers" used to decorate and enhance the current narrative of a given story arc. Her ongoing and consistent appearances suggests a well formed outline of the character's own history. How much of that detail will be revealed, or if there is a possible future tale dedicated to her viewpoint... ah there's the rub, and the teasing fun associated with the enormous legion of minor characters that make their brief appearances in Astro City tales.

A European magician who came to Astro City in 1972 because a time of great strife was coming and that the city would be at the center of it. He had an assistant, [[Grimoire]].

After the casting of a tremendously powerful spell, he seemingly disappeared. In actuality, was transformed into the [[Green Man]].

In 1973, he, alongside a few other heroes, eradicated the ancient vengeance spirit lurking within the [[Blue Knight]]. He warned [[Augustus Furst]] about the terrible implications of the Innocent Gun and explained the history of it being used at the wrong time by the wrong person in 1977. He also warned the general populace about [[The Continuum]]'s likely judgment ruling of Earth following the mysterious appearance of the [[The Incarnate]]. Later stories, he cast a powerful spell that seemingly killed him but in actuality, the spell caused him to merge with the earth's biosphere and become the amnesic [[Green Man]].

Simon Magus was incredibly adept in the magical arts and a formidable sorcerer. He has demonstrated levitation, telepathy, phasing, casting spells, had vast amount of mystical knowledge, and was no doubt capable of much, much more.

He carries a special cane that was secretly a hidden sword with him, possibly used for gutting demons or such, he also carried an owl-stylized pentagram amulet around him, his mystical tool of choice.

|observations =
The general populace judges him as a bit of an egotistical showman, Someone who likes publicity, being center-stage, and constantly in the spotlight.

He was a consultant to the police for several years in a few notable cases involving the supernaturals.

According to Kurt Busiek, Simon Magus was made to be a representative of the psychedelic and "trippy" era of the late sixties and early seventies, someone who felt like he was drawing counterculture wisdom from timeless traditions. Simon's inspirations are described by Busiek as "John Lennon as Aleister Crowley as Doctor Strange". The name Simon Magus is taken from the biblical figure in the Bible (Acts 8:9), who is also a sorcerer. Busiek stated the character took the name from the Bible because it sounded arrogant and lordly, adding to the anonymity of the character; he's described as a self-centered, sexist jerk, a chauvinist. This is shown when Simon performs sex magic with his "assistant" Grimoire and withdraws her magical abilities for himself, using her merely as lip service while he takes all the credit and has all the fun, even as far as Grimoire writing a tell-all book later in the mid-eighties after Simon's disappearance that she was the true power and source while Simon merely channeled her power.
