Some of them we have seen on panel, some are hinted at in the context of the story. Vivi said it was a [[Somatic Mapper]] and she used it to probe and download the neural patterns within Ellie's mind with the intent of having a knowledge framework to use for future robotic designs and complex algorithmic programming.

Vivian also said the Mapper would destroy Ellie, but she was wrong. It was painful and did do damage, mainly to her memory and ability to focus.
