Issue Titles - discussion

Template names are simple, but the actual name to put to the comic book itself is somewhat difficult. The Comics Database is pretty good sample for pure catalogue and hardcore referencing. But it get a bit ominous trying to approach it if you are just a casual reader, wanting to find a particular issue.

I use to favor appending the year of the first issue for a particular title and volume (Kurt Busiek's Astro City (1995) and Kurt Busiek's Astro City (1996) for volume 1 and 2 respectfully. Comics Database use to use this model too.

The indentia doesn't do that, and instead follows what we were/are doing here on Herocopia. Well, for most of the Astro City Titles. We got a bit careless with titles for the specials and strayed from the indentia. We also were a bit naive about page redirects, title sorting and did not have templates.

I am building a straw-hat, first pass set of templates for our usage here now on the site. I am very interested in hearing others take on this. Being that they are templates, they will be easy to change. So feel free to discuss and share opinions.

Thanks.

These match the indentia, they do not distinguish publisher, and they are only the America published editions.

{{KBAC1}} Kurt Busiek's Astro City Vol. 1
{{KBAC2}} Kurt Busiek's Astro City Vol. 2
{{WP}} Wizard Presents:Kurt Busiek's Astro City
{{LH}} Astro City:Local Heroes
{{ACS}} Astro City Special
{{ACA}} Astro City/Arrowsmith
{{VG}} Astro City A Visitor's Guide
{{DA1}} Astro City: Dark Age Book 1
{{SAM}} Astro City: Samaritan
{{DA2}} Astro City: Dark Age Book 2
{{BEAUTIE}} Astro City: Beautie
{{DA3}} Astro City: Dark Age Book 3
{{ASTRA}} Astro City: Astra Special
{{DA4}} Astro City: Dark Age Book 4
{{SA}} Astro City: Silver Agent
{{AC}} Astro City

There is a couple up there that make me twitch a bit.

There are no reprints in that list, and right now that includes the KBAC2 1/2(Nearness of You). I don't remember what we did with that one or how we treated the WP issue.

I also remember we did something tricky with the issue numbers and the templates so they would link to issue info pages. It would be great to re-institute those pages (I have done nothing to rebuild them here as of yet, others are welcome to go digging at the Way-Back Machine) but I want to add Yiding's issue synopsis along with all that other stuff and yea, a template to help control layout as well.

Ambitions continue.

I think the most casual reader-friendly method would be to, in all cases where it's possible, just go with what's written on the cover. Obviously, that won't suffice for the ongoings, which require differentiation between the volumes, but in cases where it does work just fine, we should do that.

So, for example, the Wizard Special would just be "Kurt Busiek's Astro City 1/2" because, hey, if you were to look at the cover, that's what you'd think it's called: http://www.comics.org/issue/58196/. And that resolves the issue of having to differentiate between the Wizard Special and the later reprint.

Beyond that, all I have to opine about the matter of naming is that I don't think referring to the current volume as just "Astro City" is ideal. I know that technically it's the first volume to go by that title, but I think we should add a "vol. 3" or a "(2013)" regardless. For anyone not aware that the title used to be KBAC but then switched to just AC, it'll be confusing.
