Today interview, creator Kurt Busiek mentions that American Chibi was inspired by Scott McCloud's Japanese chibi drawing of himself. "Chibi" is a Japanese slang word for a short person. It has morphed into use to also denote a style of drawing that contorts body proportions to resemble those of a young child, only even further exaggerated, especially the head.
